DNA of Dynamic Boards

Description

The growth and effectiveness of a nonprofit often hinges on a strong board that understands and operates within clearly defined roles. Without proper training, well-intentioned boards can stray into areas outside of their scope, resulting in micromanagement, poor engagement, and dysfunctional governance.

Using stories and real-life examples, this session examines the legal and core responsibilities of effective boards and how they use their time and talent to help organizations accomplish their mission. It includes an overview of the Lifecycle of Nonprofit Organizations, the three legal and eight core responsibilities of serving (including board recruitment and onboarding, developing policies and procedures, committee development, governance vs. management, and how to handle poor performers).

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Identify the legal and core responsibilities of board service.
• Differentiate between governance and management.
• Demonstrate strong risk management through policies and procedures.
• Describe the major steps involved in developing the board structure.

About the Speaker:

Dan Prater is the Senior Managing Consultant at Forvis Mazars, LLC. Dan has an extensive background in nonprofit leadership and higher education. He was the founder and executive director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Drury University (Springfield, MO). In this role, he organized workshops and conferences, consulted nonprofit organizations, and wrote and spoke on industry-related topics. He co-created the university's popular Master of Nonprofit and Civic Leadership and continues to serve as an adjunct instructor in the program.

Dan has authored several studies on nonprofit and civic issues. Most recently he published in-depth studies on Religious Congregation Community Engagement, Volunteerism, and Nonprofit Impact.

Dan provides consulting services to numerous nonprofits, NGOs and governmental organizations. He works with a variety of types and sizes of groups. Throughout the past few years, he has provided assistance to large institutions/organizations such as the Mississippi State University, University of Texas, Belmont University, and healthcare systems, as well as to mid-sized and small organizations that have no paid employees.

Dan was the board chair of Nonprofit Missouri, the statewide organization that promotes nonprofit organizations. He currently sits on these boards: Greene County Family Violence Center – Harmony House, Ozarks Regional YMCA (Springfield, MO), Elevate Lives (Springfield, MO), and Isabel's House Crisis Nursery - advisory board (Springfield, MO).

Dan is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops across the Midwest. In addition, he has been published more than 25 times on topics of the nonprofit industry and has authored multiple research projects.

Dan completed the Georgetown University Nonprofit Executive Management program, has a Master of Art in Communication from Drury University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Evangel University.
