Position Title: Legal Assistant for Unaccompanied Minors

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt  

Full or part-time status: Part-time 

Department: Migration and Refugee Services 

Reports to: Senior Immigration Attorney 

Hiring Range: $18.00-$23.00/hr DOE

Primary Function of Position 

As a Legal Assistant for Unaccompanied Minors, you will play a pivotal role in our Immigration Program by offering clerical support to the program and collaborating directly with clients under the guidance and supervision of our legal staff.

Major Position Responsibilities 

  1. Commitment to Mission: Uphold the mission of Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) and the immigration and refugee resettlement programs.
  2. Clerical Duties: Handle various clerical tasks, including maintaining client files (both digital and physical), scheduling appointments, communicating with clients, and relaying messages for legal staff via email and phone.
  3. Paralegal Support: Perform paralegal duties under legal staff supervision. This involves meeting with clients directly, collecting necessary documents and client information for legal forms, gathering client responses to questionnaires, and handling application mailings.
  4. Eligibility Communication: Clearly communicate with clients and community partners regarding eligibility for CCS Immigration Program Services.
  5. Know Your Rights Presentations: Conduct Know Your Rights presentations and legal screening interviews for minors as required.
  6. Case Documentation: Thoroughly document all case work in the client's file or the electronic filing system.
  7. Interpretation and Translation: Provide interpretation and translation services as needed.
  8. Confidentiality Adherence: Maintain strict attorney/client confidentiality.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment 

  1. This role is in a professional office environment, utilizing standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. 

Physical Demands 

  1. While primarily a sedentary role, some filing tasks are involved. This entails lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasionally bending or standing as needed.

  10. Computer Proficiency: Advanced word processing and computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education, Training, and Experience 

  1. Educational Requirements: a Bachelor's Degree, Paralegal Certification, or equivalent experience.
  2. Bilingual Proficiency: Proficient in both Spanish and English.
  3. Microsoft Office 365 Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  4. Keyboarding and Data Entry Skills: Competence in keyboarding and accurate data entry.
  5. Office Management Knowledge: Understanding of office management systems and procedures.
  6. Immigration Law Experience: Preferred experience in immigration law.
  7. Law Office or Child-Related Experience: Preferred experience working in a law office or with children.



Background Screening Requirement 

  1. Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

Position status and expected schedule 

  1. The general work schedule encompasses up to 20-25 hours to be distributed between Monday and Friday, with the work hours falling between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. That being said, this schedule is flexible to accommodate your availability.
