Hey, Board Treasurer (or potential Board Treasurer), do we have the training opportunity for you! Come and join UNA as we educate nonprofit Board Treasurers on best practices and explore expectations and responsibilities in the role. Get the most out of this important oversight position by educating your Board Treasurer. This training is suitable for nonprofits of all sizes.

This is Course 4 of the Financial Empowerment Series. This training will be recorded and provided to registrants after the sessions are completed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Overarching Duty of a Treasurer
    So, you’ve been asked to serve as a treasurer of a nonprofit. Overseeing the finances of an organization may seem like a daunting task, but we can give you some practical ideas on how to focus on the right things and feel successful.

  • Taking an Organizational Financial Physical
    Organizations are pretty good about doing all kinds of planning. But sometimes investing in systems to support the organization’s finances will take the backburner until they become an emergency. We will walk you through how to take a brief “physical” of the organization’s financial systems so you know what is going well and what can be improved upon. 

  • Planning Organizational Financial Physical Therapy
    Treasurers are uniquely positioned to improve the organization’s financial strength and agility. While this will look different for every organization, we will give you some practical guidance where to start and brainstorm with you about how to resolve weaknesses you may currently be experiencing.

  • Avoiding Treasurer Malapropos
    Treasurers can unintentionally expose themselves or their organizations to liability. We’ll share some of the top mistakes to avoid.

  • Transitioning
    Like any other hero, treasurers should stand on the shoulders of those who came before them rather than starting at ground zero. We’ll share best practices from other organizations in the area about how to transition institutional knowledge from one treasurer to another and keep the momentum going!

About the Speaker(s):


Shalaun T. Howell, CPA is a partner at Bountiful Peak Advisors, a Utah CPA firm providing audit, tax, bookkeeping, and consulting services to over 150 nonprofits each year.


Annie Stubben holds a degree in Business with a Finance emphasis and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Brigham Young University, where they graduated at the top of their class. With a strong background in finance and research, she has worked as a business banking credit analyst and a research assistant in the Latin American Equity Research department for a leading investment bank. Currently, they oversee investments and strategic giving as a manager for a private foundation. Passionate about community service, Annie actively participates on school community councils and committees, and currently serves as the board treasurer for Special Olympics Utah.
