Saturday, December 6, 2025 (11:00 AM - 3:00 PM) (MST)

Description

Overview:

Many of the enslaved persons brought to Utah came from a culture known today as Gullah Geechee. The Utah State Capitol holds Black history.

Did you know that many of the enslaved persons brought to Utah came from a culture known today as Gullah Geechee? Did you know that the first Black history exhibit ever to be in the Utah State Capitol is about the Gullah Geechee people, their culture, and their tie to Utah? Through this tour you will learn the origin of the culture brought to Utah by the enslaved persons who were brought here.

Robert Burch, Founder and Executive Director of Sema Hadithi Foundation, will be your Tour Guide. Utilizing this first-ever Black history exhibit scheduled to end December 31, 2025, he will guide you through time and history beginning in the Lowcountry and concluding in Utah to learn about the culture and peoples who helped build Utah into a state. This tour also covers African American history at the State Capitol and its grounds, including the first African American tied to the Utah Legislature and Salt Lake City’s 1866 lynching on the grounds pre-dating the complex construction.
