Preservation Site Stewardship
Preservation Site Steward
Ongoing, throughout Utah
Responsibilities:
• Research, visit and monitor assigned African American heritage sites, memorials, or markers on a 12–24 month schedule.
• Document the condition of the site through photos, notes, and reports.
• Perform light upkeep as needed (e.g., trimming overgrown grass or shrubs).
• Report findings to the Preservation Committee and recommend any needed maintenance or repairs.
• Assist in creating and scheduling events for larger maintenance or repair projects.
• Help raise awareness of the site’s history and importance within the community.
Qualifications:
• Interest in African American history and cultural preservation.
• Reliable and detail-oriented; able to follow a simple schedule.
• Comfortable with light outdoor activity.
• Strong communication skills for documenting and reporting site conditions.
Commitment:
• Flexible, with site visits generally required once per year (some sites may require every two years).
• Occasional committee meetings or orientation/training sessions.

As a Site Steward, you’ll play a key role in preserving and protecting African American historic places in Utah, ensuring they remain a visible part of our shared community heritage.
