Specific Board Member Expectations

Term of Service: Board members typically serve staggered 3 year terms, with the possibility of reelection or term limits as specified in the organization's bylaws.

Time Commitment: Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings, which are typically 1hr in duration. Members should strive to attend at least 80% of meetings in a given year. Additional time commitments for the occasional working group, tree planting or other community event, should be expected. On average, that may be an additional 4 hrs per quarter.

Community Events: Board Members should strive to attend at least two tree plantings, or other community events, per year.

Remuneration: This is a volunteer position. Board members do not receive compensation for their service but may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

Financial Contributions & Fundraising: Active involvement in fundraising and an annual personal contribution is highly encouraged, though not required. There is no minimum threshold for donations. Board members should not make commitments on behalf of Tree Utah unless authorized by the full Board of  Directors or the Executive Director

Program Development: The role of the board is to support the Executive Director so they can run program operations. It’s not the board’s responsibility to run program operations or develop key programs. The Executive Director and Board may collaboratively create committees to support specific development efforts, and these will typically be well defined, time limited and focused for specific organizational needs.

Expectations of Proper Conduct:

  • Attend meetings with camera on and with limited personal distractions whenever possible

  • Respect your fellow board members and Tree Utah staff. Don’t demean another board member/staff in or out of the board meetings

  • All board meeting discussions and content are confidential and should not be shared outside of that group without permission

  • Act in the best interest of TreeUtah

  • Honor decisions of the TreeUtah Board

Application Process: Interested candidates should submit the Tree Utah Board Application form. Tree Utah’s Board Development Committee will review applications and will schedule interview conversations with qualified candidates. Candidates that the Board Development Committee want to bring onto the board will be presented at the following board meeting where the entire board will vote on their acceptance. The Chair of the Board Development Committee will be responsible for coordinating the process, and the Board Chair, along with the Executive Director, will be responsible for offering positions after the board vote.
