Women of the World Board Member - Accounting and Finance
Term Three years, eligible for one additional term (two-term limit, six years maximum) |

Time Board commitments plus approximately 1–3 hours per month for specialty work and consultation |
Role Purpose
Provide clear financial oversight so the Board can protect WoW’s resources, manage risk, and make sustainable decisions in service of women and families.

Women of the World (WoW) supports refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking women as they build self-reliance, economic security, and a voice in the community. Board members advance this mission with respect for each woman’s dignity, strengths, culture, and right to shape her own future.
Targeted Contributions
Review financial statements, budgets, forecasts, cash flow, and key variances; explain material issues in plain language to the Board.
Help develop the annual budget and long-range financial plans aligned with WoW’s strategy and programs.
Monitor internal controls, financial policies, reserves, and significant financial risks; recommend practical improvements.
Support oversight of the annual audit or financial review and track management’s response to recommendations.
Help ensure appropriate nonprofit accounting, tax, reporting, and grant-compliance practices, including GAAP where applicable.
Serve on or lead the Finance or Audit Committee and advise on the financial implications of major initiatives.
Shared Board Commitments
Prepare for and participate actively in board and committee meetings; attend at least 75% of approximately 10 board meetings each year and serve on at least one committee.
Attend orientation and the annual board retreat, and support WoW’s signature events when possible.
Use sound judgment in strategy, policy, financial oversight, and evaluation of organizational impact.
Act as an informed ambassador; support fundraising and relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners; make a personally meaningful annual contribution.
Protect confidentiality, disclose conflicts, and fulfill the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience: decide diligently, put WoW first, and follow its mission and the law.
Desired Expertise
Professional experience in accounting, finance, audit, banking, investment management, or nonprofit financial management.
Ability to interpret financial statements, budgets, controls, and risk; CPA or comparable credential is welcome but not required.
Clear communication, sound judgment, and a commitment to transparent, mission-aligned stewardship.
