Role Purpose

Support fair, sustainable people practices that help WoW attract, develop, and retain staff while maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and accountable workplace.

About Women of the World

Women of the World (WoW) supports refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking women as they build self-reliance, economic security, and a voice in the community. Board members advance this mission with respect for each woman’s dignity, strengths, culture, and right to shape her own future.

Targeted Contributions

Advise the Board on people strategy, organizational structure, workforce planning, retention, leadership development, and workplace culture.

Support the Board’s oversight of the Executive Director, including clear goals, annual evaluation, compensation review, succession planning, and professional support.

Review high-level employment policies and practices for consistency, fairness, legal compliance, accessibility, and cultural responsiveness.

Help interpret workforce indicators such as turnover, engagement, workload, compensation, and training needs without intruding into day-to-day management.

Promote equitable recruitment, onboarding, performance management, professional development, and compensation practices.

Advise on sensitive workplace risks and ensure concerns follow appropriate, confidential processes, with outside expertise engaged when needed.

Shared Board Commitments

Prepare for and participate actively in board and committee meetings; attend at least 75% of approximately 10 board meetings each year and serve on at least one committee.

Attend orientation and the annual board retreat, and support WoW’s signature events when possible.

Use sound judgment in strategy, policy, financial oversight, and evaluation of organizational impact.

Act as an informed ambassador; support fundraising and relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners; make a personally meaningful annual contribution.

Protect confidentiality, disclose conflicts, and fulfill the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience: decide diligently, put WoW first, and follow its mission and the law.

Desired Expertise

Senior people-leadership experience and knowledge of equitable employment, compensation, performance, and workplace investigations.

Cultural humility and discretion, with a commitment to fair, respectful workplace culture.
