Women of the World Board Member - Legal
Term Three years, eligible for one additional term (two-term limit, six years maximum) |

Role Purpose
Bring a legal and risk-informed perspective to governance so WoW can pursue its mission responsibly, protect the people it serves, and meet its obligations.

Women of the World (WoW) supports refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking women as they build self-reliance, economic security, and a voice in the community. Board members advance this mission with respect for each woman’s dignity, strengths, culture, and right to shape her own future.
Targeted Contributions
Please note: board service provides governance guidance and issue-spotting; it does not create an attorney-client relationship or replace retained counsel.
Advise the Board on governance, bylaws, policies, conflicts of interest, records, delegations of authority, and other nonprofit compliance matters.
Help identify legal and regulatory risks related to employment, contracts, privacy, fundraising, programs, facilities, and organizational growth.
Review or help triage significant agreements and legal questions, identifying when specialized outside counsel is needed.
Support periodic review of insurance, document retention, whistleblower, safeguarding, and risk-management practices.
Promote decisions that protect confidentiality, due process, dignity, and equitable access for women from varied immigration and cultural backgrounds.
Shared Board Commitments
Prepare for and participate actively in board and committee meetings; attend at least 75% of approximately 10 board meetings each year and serve on at least one committee.
Attend orientation and the annual board retreat, and support WoW’s signature events when possible.
Use sound judgment in strategy, policy, financial oversight, and evaluation of organizational impact.
Act as an informed ambassador; support fundraising and relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners; make a personally meaningful annual contribution.
Protect confidentiality, disclose conflicts, and fulfill the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience: decide diligently, put WoW first, and follow its mission and the law.
Desired Expertise
Attorney in good standing or senior legal professional with relevant experience; Utah nonprofit, employment, privacy, immigration, or contract experience is especially useful.
Ability to explain legal risk and options plainly while distinguishing legal requirements from policy choices.
Sound judgment, discretion, cultural humility, and commitment to mission-centered governance.
