Women of the World Board Member - Public Relations
Term Three years, eligible for one additional term (two-term limit, six years maximum) |

Role Purpose
Strengthen WoW’s public voice and reputation through accurate, dignified, and culturally responsive communications that center the agency of the women WoW serves.

Women of the World (WoW) supports refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking women as they build self-reliance, economic security, and a voice in the community. Board members advance this mission with respect for each woman’s dignity, strengths, culture, and right to shape her own future.
Targeted Contributions
Please note: this is a governance-level advisory role — providing strategic counsel to the Board — not a hands-on marketing, production, or day-to-day communications role.
Advise on communications strategy, audience priorities, messaging, media relations, and reputation management.
Help translate WoW’s mission, programs, and impact into clear messages for community members, donors, partners, and public officials.
Review significant campaigns, public statements, and media opportunities for accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with WoW’s values.
Support ethical storytelling practices, including informed consent, privacy, trauma awareness, and avoidance of stereotypes or savior narratives.
Prepare Board and staff leaders for interviews and high-visibility events; provide guidance during sensitive or crisis communications.
Expand relationships with media, communications professionals, community voices, and culturally specific outlets.
Shared Board Commitments
Prepare for and participate actively in board and committee meetings; attend at least 75% of approximately 10 board meetings each year and serve on at least one committee.
Attend orientation and the annual board retreat, and support WoW’s signature events when possible.
Use sound judgment in strategy, policy, financial oversight, and evaluation of organizational impact.
Act as an informed ambassador; support fundraising and relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners; make a personally meaningful annual contribution.
Protect confidentiality, disclose conflicts, and fulfill the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience: decide diligently, put WoW first, and follow its mission and the law.
Desired Expertise
Experience in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing, public affairs, or community engagement.
Strong writing and message judgment, with experience serving diverse audiences and managing sensitive information.
Commitment to inclusive language, informed consent, and communications that preserve dignity and agency.
