Adult Programs Assistant
Join Red Butte Garden and Arboretum’s Adult Programs department and help us reach our mission of connecting people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes through various educational programming! Experience and work with experts in a wide range of programs including wellness, creative expressions, horticulture, ecology, and culinary arts. We are looking for customer-service minded, organized, and adaptable individual to help with adult classes, workshops, lectures, and outreach. Work with Red Butte Garden staff, volunteers, guests and outside instructors to ensure and support program quality and success. This position will be responsible being the point person for day of set up, guest greeting and check-in, instructor and volunteer support, troubleshooting, clean up, etc. for all adult programs.
Responsibilities:
Be the point person for assigned classes, workshops, and lectures, including troubleshooting using independent problem-solving outside of core staff hours and prioritizing within program goals. • Coordinate with instructor, guests, volunteers and staff to ensure a streamlined experience. • Set up and clean up for programming, including lifting and moving up to 50 pounds, navigating uneven, rocky terrain, stairs, and inclined paths. • Handle incidents, issues, and facility clean-up for programming as needed. • Report back to Program Manager on program success, concerns, needs, and potential changes. • Drive garden carts or trams for class set-up and student accessibility transport. • Represent the garden, our mission, and university professionally with guests, instructors, volunteers, staff, and partners. • Assist in communicating with volunteers weekly regarding assigned duties/tasks
• Help with registering guests for programs • Assist with data collection and system processes • Assist with supply inventory and organization • Assist with creating website listings and maintaining updates and changes. • Assist with outreach tabling and other events • Attend regular meetings with manager, occasionally attend department-wide meetings • Assist with other projects and duties as assigned
Work Environment and level or Frequency typically required
Often: Classroom environment, Garden/Outdoor environment, Storage and tool rooms, Event spaces, Public spaces
Seldom: parking lots, campus areas
Physical Requirements and level of frequency that may be required
Often: standing, sitting, listening, talking, walking (sometimes on hilly, uneven terrain), driving trams, bending, reaching overhead, repetitive hand motion (such as typing), lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., setting up classroom spaces
Minimum Qualifications:
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Program Assistant, I: Requires little to no related experience.
Program Assistant, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
Program Assistant, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
Preferences:
• Experience in natural science, botany, or gardens preferred • Experience working in education or public programming • Customer service experience • Great communication and organizational skills • Experience working independently and a proven problem-solving ability in a dynamic environment • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Power Automate • Experience with Wagtail, Altru, and Volgistics preferred
• Ability to lift/carry 50lbs • Able to walk on uneven, rocky terrain, stairs, and inclined paths • Must have a valid driver’s license
