Position Summary 

Utah Nonprofits Association (UNA) seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Co–Chief Executive Officer in a structured leadership transition role. This position is designed to transition to a single Chief Executive Officer over a defined period of months, culminating in full assumption of CEO responsibilities. 

During the transition period, the Co-CEO will partner closely with the current Chief Executive Officer, gradually assuming responsibility across all aspects of organizational leadership, strategy, operations, and external relations. By the conclusion of the transition, the Co-CEO will fully step into the CEO role with complete accountability for organizational performance and impact. 

Transition Structure 

• Serve alongside the current CEO in a shared leadership model during the transition period 
• Gradually assume increasing responsibility across all functions of the organization 
• Build strong relationships with staff, Board of Directors, partners, and stakeholders 
• Move from shared decision-making to primary executive authority 
• Culminate in full ownership of all CEO responsibilities, including strategy, operations, revenue, and external leadership  

Key Responsibilities 

Executive Leadership and Strategy 

• Partner in the development and execution of UNA’s strategic vision and priorities 
• Lead organizational planning, innovation, and long-term growth strategies 
• Ensure alignment across programs, operations, and impact initiatives 
• Ultimately assume full responsibility for organizational strategy and performance 
• Perform all work in a responsive manner consistent with UNA’s mission, vision, and values 

External Relations, Advocacy, and Sector Leadership 

• Serve as a leading voice for Utah’s nonprofit sector 
• Advance UNA’s advocacy priorities and public policy efforts 
• Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, funders, partners, and community leaders 
• Represent UNA in public forums, media, and statewide initiatives  

Fundraising and Revenue Development 

• Lead and expand diversified revenue strategies, including fundraising, sponsorships, and partnerships 
• Cultivate strong relationships with institutional funders, foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors 
• Partner with internal leaders to meet and exceed revenue goals 
• Ensure long-term financial sustainability of the organization  

Operations and Organizational Leadership 

• Oversee internal operations, systems, and organizational infrastructure 
• Ensure effective program delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement 
• Maintain strong financial oversight in partnership with staff and Board 
• Foster a high-performing, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture 

Board Partnership and Governance 

• Build a strong, collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors 
• Support governance, strategic planning, and organizational accountability 
• Transition into the primary liaison to the Board upon assuming full CEO responsibilities  

Shared Responsibilities During Transition 

• Joint accountability for organizational performance and results 
• Collaborative leadership on strategy, budget, and major decisions 
• Alignment across internal operations and external initiatives 
• Unified communication with staff, Board, and stakeholders  

Qualifications 

Required 

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience 
• Deep experience in the nonprofit sector, with a strong understanding of its challenges and opportunities 
• Direct, demonstrated experience in public policy advocacy and government relations 
• Proven success in fundraising and revenue development, including major gifts, grants, and partnerships 
• Significant leadership experience with increasing organizational responsibility 
• Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors 
• Track record of leading organizational growth, strategy, and change 
• Experience working within nonprofit, philanthropic, and policy communities in Utah

Hours 

This is a full-time, exempt executive leadership role. The role requires responsiveness, visibility, and adaptability, with time commitments driven by advancing the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. While core activities typically occur during standard business hours, which are between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, the CEO maintains a flexible schedule aligned with organizational needs. Morning, evening, and occasional weekend commitments are expected for board meetings, events, and community engagement.  

Work Location and Travel Expectations 

UNA operates primarily as a remote workplace while maintaining a strong commitment to in-person collaboration, relationship-building, and community engagement. This role requires a balance of remote work flexibility and a consistent in-person presence to support collaboration, advocacy, and community engagement across Utah. 

• Must reside in Utah and be available for regular in-person meetings, collaborative work sessions, organizational gatherings, and onboarding activities, primarily in Salt Lake County and throughout the Wasatch Front. 
• Work is primarily performed remotely, with occasional in-person meetings, and access to UNA office space in Murray, Utah. 
• Participate in member, community, advocacy, and special events across Utah, including legislative activities at the Utah State Capitol and occasional travel to Washington, D.C.   
• Position requires periodic travel throughout Utah as well as occasional U.S. travel to support member engagement, advocacy, partnership development, and organizational priorities.

Salary and Benefits  

This is a salaried, full-time, exempt position.  

Salary Range: $85,000-$115,000
