Internship Overview & Goals
The Communications Intern will play a key role in expanding Friends For Sight’s digital presence through video storytelling, photography, and written content. They will gain hands-on experience in video production, content creation, social media marketing, and public relations, culminating in a final peer-to-peer fundraiser project to support the organization’s media and development outreach.
Key Responsibilities
1. Video Production & Editing (Two 1-Minute Videos per Month)
Plan, shoot, and edit two short-form videos per month highlighting Friends For Sight’s mission, impact, and events.
- Develop content for social media (Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn).
- Capture testimonials, behind-the-scenes clips, and educational content.
2. Photography & Visual Storytelling
- Learn and apply basic photography techniques for nonprofit storytelling.
- Take high-quality photos at sight fest events, school vision screenings, and staff/volunteer spotlights.
- Edit images for use in social media, newsletters and promotional materials.
- Organize and maintain a photo archive for future use in box.
3. Social Media Content & Management
- Create engaging photo and video posts for social media 2x a week.
- Research relevant hashtags and trends to increase visibility.
- Monitor engagement metrics and adjust strategies accordingly.
4. Public Relations & Writing
- Assist in writing press releases and outreach emails to media contacts.
- Draft 3 to 4 monthly email newsletters.
- Research and compile a list of local media outlets for potential coverage.
5. Final Capstone Project: Peer-To-Peer Fundraising Campaign
By the end of the semester, the intern will plan and launch a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign for Friends for Sight, which will include:
- Creating a campaign theme, visuals, and messaging
- Developing a fundraiser toolkit
- Supporting participant engagement
- Coordinating social media and email outreach
- Tracking engagement and creating a campaign recap that highlights results, learnings, and overall impact
Intern Supervision & Learning Opportunities
- Weekly Check-ins: 15-30 minute meeting at the start of one shift to review progress and assign new tasks.
- Mid-Semester Feedback Session: Discussion on skills learned, challenges, and additional learning opportunities.
- Content & Communications Training: Opportunities to practice with guidance and feedback.
- Networking & Professional Development: Potential to attend nonprofit marketing events, webinars, city meetings, SightFest or meetings with key staff and board members.
Required Skills & Tools
- Interest in video production, photography, and digital marketing.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and engagement strategies.
- Willingness to learn photography techniques and video editing tools.
- Basic knowledge of Canva, CapCut, or Adobe Suite (preferred but not required—training provided).
- Comfort communicating with diverse audiences in community settings.
Sample Intern Weekly Schedule (This is adjustable)
Monday (Hybrid - Fieldwork & Remote Work)
Morning (Fieldwork - Visiting Schools & Community Sites)
- Travel to schools to capture interviews, photos, and videos showcasing Friends for Sight’s impact.
- Conduct short interviews with students, teachers, and beneficiaries for storytelling content.
- Take high-quality photos and video clips for social media, newsletters, and marketing materials.
- Work with the team to ensure consent and permissions for media use.
Late morning/ Early Afternoon (Remote Work - Content Creation & Editing)
- Edit photos and videos for use in upcoming campaigns.
- Draft captions and social media posts based on fieldwork content.
- Organize digital media files for easy future access.
- Prepare video clips for the two 1-minute videos per month project.
- Additional Research & Organization
Wednesday (In-Office Work - Marketing & Strategy Focus)
On-Site at Friends for Sight Office (9 AM - 2 PM - this is adjustable)
- Attend weekly check-in meetings to review tasks, progress, and upcoming priorities.
- Work on social media content scheduling and strategy.
- Assist with press releases, email newsletters.
- Continue editing and finalizing video projects.
- Plan marketing materials for fundraising events and booths.
- Collaborate with the team on donor outreach and engagement efforts.
Internship Wrap-Up (End of Semester)
- The intern will wrap up their digital fundraiser campaign to the team as their final project.
- A portfolio of videos, photos, and written content will be created for their resume.
The intern will receive a letter of recommendation upon successful completion.
