Communications & Outreach Intern
Description
Sageland Collaborative serves as a leading source of conservation science in Utah and surrounding regions. Sageland Collaborative’s mission is to provide science-based strategies for wildlife and land conservation. We focus on increasing biodiversity and populations of special-status species; conserving wildlife pathways; and restoring habitat. We work toward these goals by bringing science into on-the-ground action, fostering collaborations, and working with the entire community.
The Sageland Collaborative team consists of dedicated and skilled scientists, project managers, and communications specialists focused on advancing our mission.
We are looking to hire a summer communications & outreach intern to create captivating, mission-driven stories to increase volunteer engagement. This position will focus on working with our Communications & Outreach teams to produce content and host outreach events that engage diverse communities across the West.
Duties:
- Create content for use across communications (social media, newsletters, blog posts, etc.).
- Work outdoors on our Utah HerpSearch, Utah Pollinator Pursuit, Riverscape Restoration, Fence Restoration, and Intermountain West Shorebird Survey programs.
- Facilitate Bug Club meetups in coordination with outreach staff and partner organizations.
- Represent Sageland Collaborative at outreach and tabling events.
- Capture photo and video content while at events or in the field.
- Engage with volunteers, partners, and staff while at events or in the field to foster community.
- Support making our volunteer projects accessible to diverse groups, including offering Spanish translation services as needed.
Qualifications:

Desired Skills/Experience:
- Experience equivalent to 2 years of college coursework.
- Eager to connect with volunteers, partners, staff, and community members.
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience applying principles of community engagement.
- Willingness to learn how to work outdoors in variable conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, high altitude, insects, etc.).
- Bilingual in Spanish and English, with proficiency in written and oral communication
- Graphic design skills
- Visual and/or written storytelling skills
- Creative and collaborative mindset
- Experience or interest in engaging diverse communities, including, but not limited to, BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, Latine, rural, and Native Nations
- Reliability, timeliness, and dedication to work tasks
Required Qualifications:
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- Applicants must be able to commute daily to Sageland Collaborative’s office in Salt Lake City, Utah. Use of personal vehicle for field work (travel to field sites up to 1.5 hours away) will be reimbursed by Sageland Collaborative at $0.70/mile. If reliable transportation to field sites is not available, accommodations will be made.
What You Will Practice and Learn:
- Nonprofit communication and storytelling
- Volunteer engagement
- Identification of plants, birds, amphibians, and insects of the Intermountain West
- Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva
- Build your portfolio (graphic design, writing, photography, etc.)
- Networking with professionals and resume building
Schedule: May through August. Exact start and end dates are flexible. Hours are typically Monday through Friday 9am-5pm, 40 hours/week with some longer days and weekends as needed.
Salary: $22.35/hour
