Contractor Fractional Controller/Accountant
Organization: Mountain West Mothers’ Milk Bank
Location: primarily remote; 1x per month on site – South Salt Lake
Time Commitment: Fractional – approximately 20–30 hours per month
Reports To: Executive Director / BOD Treasurer
Compensation: $80-$95 an hour

Mountain West Mothers’ Milk Bank is a $1M annual revenue mission‑driven nonprofit with a hands‑on production operation. We process donated human milk and provide it to regional hospitals to provide nutrition to babies with the greatest need. We care about our mission and running a financially sound organization. We’re looking for an experienced financial professional who enjoys staying engaged and sharing accounting expertise without the demands of a full‑time role.
About the Role
This fractional Controller role is a great fit for a CPA or senior accounting professional who wants flexible, meaningful work on a part time basis.
This hands on role focuses on oversight, guidance, mentoring and judgment—making sure the financial picture is accurate, understandable, and well‑managed. Day‑to‑day bookkeeping is handled by staff and a part time contract bookkeeper; your role is to review, adjust, advise, and support leadership and the Board.
Work is concentrated at the beginning of each month in support of the monthly finance committee meeting.
How You’ll Contribute
- Review monthly financial statements and ensure accuracy and clarity
- Prepare high‑level financial summaries for leadership and the Board
- Participate (as needed) in Finance Committee meetings
- Review month‑end close activities, reconciliations, and journal entries including bank reconciliations and trial balance support schedules
- Mentor and review work performed by the bookkeeper
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and donor requirements
- Review and maintain financial policies and procedures; monitor compliance
- Coordinate with external parties for year‑end audits and tax preparation
- Manage IRS correspondence
- Share best practices and help strengthen internal controls over time
What We’re Looking For
- Significant experience in accounting or finance, including Controller‑level responsibility a plus
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly desired
- Manufacturing or inventory experience is a plus, but not required
- Clear communicator who can explain financial information to non‑financial leaders
- Experience with QuickBooks (or similar systems) and Excel
