Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for the operational integrity of the organization’s financial statements and internal controls. This role leads the month-end close process, ensures balance sheet and income statement accuracy, oversees reconciliations, and supervises the finance team. The Controller executes financial strategy established by the VP of Finance and ensures timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting. This position includes a 90-day evaluation period, after which performance will be reviewed.
Essential Job Functions
Month-End Close Leadership
· Lead and manage the monthly close process
· Maintain close checklist and timelines
· Ensure reconciliations and journal entries are completed prior to finalization
· Review financial statements for completeness and accuracy
· Approve completion of monthly close prior to VP of Finance review
Financial Statement Integrity
· Ensure accuracy of income statement and balance sheet
· Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations
· Investigate and resolve discrepancies
· Ensure proper cutoff and reporting accuracy
Internal Controls & Compliance
· Maintain appropriate separation of duties
· Monitor adherence to financial procedures
· Identify internal control gaps and implement corrective improvements
· Support audit preparation and documentation
· Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
Financial Reporting
· Support in building and consolidating monthly financial reporting packages
· Support preparation of executive materials
· Provide variance analysis and operational financial insights
Team Leadership
· Supervise Director of Finance and oversee additional 3 team members
· Establish workflow accountability and performance standards
· Maintain close schedules and expectations
· Support staff development and cross-training

Qualifications
· 8–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
· Demonstrated experience managing organizational budgets, financial reporting, and month-end and year-end close processes.
· Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including grant tracking, fund accounting, and compliance requirements.
· Experience managing financial audit processes and working with external auditors.
· Proven ability to analyze financial data and provide strategic financial insights to leadership.
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and project management skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting or financial management systems (e.g., NetSuite or similar ERP systems).
· Ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis and meet critical financial deadlines.
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required, or equivalent professional experience.
Physical/Sensory Demands
Work is generally performed in a safe and comfortable office. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit for long periods of time; use computer to enter data; use telephone to converse with customers and employees; walk and stand for long periods of time; perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement. Travel to attend conferences, training, outreach and other events occurs routinely. Rarely required to lift up to 30 lbs.
