Director, Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program
Job Description
KEY FUNCTION
The CIT Director plans, schedules, and supervises the CITs before and during camp sessions.They work with other directors to manage any CIT situations that may arise. They coach and mentor the CITs to work as a team, to support the counselors with whom the CITs work, and to develop as volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Minimum of bachelor’s degree, plus 3 years of prior camp or leadership experience (preferably at Camp Hobé); or minimum of 8 years of prior camp or leadership experience
* People skills, able to meet engage in conversation with people of varying backgrounds
* Desire and skills needed to bring people into a functioning unit
* Ability to provide guidance, verbal instruction, and supervision to others in a caring, supportive manner
* Ability to plan, originate, organize, and carry out organization programs
* Self-motivated, good character, adaptability, enthusiasm, and sense of humor, patience and self-control
* Open and honest in relationships; willing to learn from experience
* Willingness to participate in program activities
* Flexible and able to respond positively to changes in duties or schedule
* Current CPR, first aid, and valid driver license preferred
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Work with Program Directors and Deputy Director to help CITs work with other staff and campers, and to plan at least 1 program activity.
* Motivate the CITs to work together as a team, both with each other and with other volunteers and staff
* Help CITs to identify and meet the needs of the campers
* Help CITs to carry out camp programs as planned or revised
* Supervise CITs and campers
* Model and encourage a culture of respect, acceptance, and enthusiasm
* Follow, implement, and enforce all organization policies, rules, and regulations
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Prior to the camp session:
Work with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit CIT applicants, review submitted applications, actively participate in interviews, review CIT reference checks, and select CIT volunteers for Day Camp / Hobé Juniors and Kids Week.
Coordinate with the Program Directors to make specific camp assignments (duties, bunks, buddies, breaks) to each session’s CIT volunteers. The overall goal is to assign CITs to best utilize talents, interests, and cultures, while also considering each individual’s maturity and temperament.
Select experienced CIT volunteers to serve as CIT Leaders for each camp session. Coach and supervise the CIT volunteers in planning, organizing, and carrying out a program activity during the session; this could be a service activity for the organization or a program activity for the campers.
Review and select CIT teambuilding / group activities to meet program goals.
Ensure that necessary supplies are obtained for various activities, including CIT teambuilding / group activities and CIT program activities.
Attend and assist with pre-camp training, including providing training to all volunteers and the CIT team about the CIT program.
Be familiar with organization manuals and policies to meet program goals.
Be familiar with crisis management plan, including emergency procedures.
During the camp sessions: Must be onsite during the Day Camp / Hobé Juniors and Kids Week sessions.
Conduct daily CIT staff meetings.
Attend daily adult (non-CIT) staff meetings.
Provide guidance for the mainstreaming of special needs campers and CITs.
Interpret organization policy and goals when handling challenging situations.
Meet with CITs as needed to give encouragement, motivation, and feedback.
Arrange for CITs to complete evaluations.
At all times:
Evaluate performance of CIT volunteers during (informal) and after sessions (formal); may delegate evaluations to CIT Leaders.
Submit receipts and required expense documentation to the organization office as soon as possible, but within 15 days of the end of camp.
Debrief after the session, including Director wrap-up and review of completed evaluations.
Other duties as needed or desired.

Able to communicate in a professional manner during public relations
Able to understand and follow instructions given by other Directors and leaders
Able to understand and implement requirements of ACA and COCA standards
Able to communicate with and instruct others, both verbally and nonverbally
Possess strength and endurance needed to supervise campers, CITs, and other volunteers
Able to identify and respond to hazards; able to assist with emergency situations
Able to communicate by phone and operate a vehicle in emergency situations
Able to observe and assess participant behavior, and to enforce appropriate regulations
Able to form a team with others that is dedicated to providing the best experience for all participants
POSITION TYPE: Seasonal paid Staff Member, duties primarily occur during pre-camp planning and onsite during the camp sessions, although some post-camp wrap-up is required. Typical timeframe of duties is from January through July. Time commitment varies over this time, although the average commitment is approximately 160 hours total, outside of the time spent at camp.
