Director of Development and Communications

Event Planning and Management Fundraising and Development Marketing and Communications

Reports to: Executive Director

Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt

Supervises: Grant Writer; Development and Communications Assistant

The Director of Development and Communications position develops, implements, and monitors a comprehensive fundraising plan to expand philanthropic support of Women of the World. This includes identifying and strengthening relationships with community stakeholders, actively pursuing and managing corporate and individual leads, fostering strong donor stewardship, and seeking, applying for, and managing grant funding. Additionally, the position oversees the marketing and communications functions of the organization.


Responsibilities

Development

Oversee all day-to-day operations of the Development Department.

Lead the strategic implementation of annual fundraising programs, including the management of staff, special events and donor programs, publications and communications.

Develop the strategy and operational capacity of the Development Department.

Help create a culture of philanthropy amongst Staff and Board.

Create and implement an annual strategic fundraising plan that supports the vision of the organization and is responsive to various funding sources.

Develop an annual list of prospects and generate expected revenue for annual budgeting.

Provide leadership for planning, creating, and executing all fundraising activities including an annual campaign; foundation grants; corporate giving; major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and stewardship; and special events.

Identify key annual and major donor prospects on a quarterly basis and develop plan for cultivation and donor acquisition, and create a process for tracking relationship and status of communication with individual donor prospects.

Successfully advance a portfolio of major gift prospects/donors by identifying and facilitating new, potential prospects for partnership in individual and corporate giving.

Provide fundraising leadership to the Board of Directors, including attending board meetings, facilitating board trainings, identifying prospective donors and managing board giving.

Oversee all foundation strategy and implementation including foundation relations and private grant writing.

 Nurture and steward relationships with existing donors, with the intention of retaining and upgrading donors as the relationship progresses.

Oversee a yearly program of special fundraising events and strategies to increase individual, corporate, foundation and organizational support.

Recruit and manage fundraising committees and volunteers.

Manage and develop grant-writing function.

Communications

Oversee and manage all public relations, marketing and promotional efforts, including the development of customer/client communication and volunteer recruitment tools, collateral materials, promotional tools, media relations, and advertising.

Develop a comprehensive marketing, PR, and communications plan that establishes strategies and tactics segmented by key target audiences.

Oversee branding, image, and consistency of messaging in all organization materials.

Maintain and manage relationships with external consultants and partners.

Provide oversight of the development and communications assistant to manage website, social media and other communication functions and strategy.

Review materials prior to submission to ensure message remains on brand.

Produce communications collateral that will support donor cultivation and stewardship.

Provide direction and oversight of third-party communications contractors to design and produce annual giving campaigns, impact reports, annual marketing themes, special event collateral, as well as auxiliary marketing, promotional, and outreach materials.

Coordinate media events; speak on behalf of the organization with media outlets as needed

Represent Women of the World at presentations, media appearances, and one-on-one meetings.

Management and Administration

Oversee and effectively use systems and technology, including fundraising and project management software.

Oversee and be accountable for the fundraising budget and setting annual goals.

Anticipate to a reasonable degree, changes in projections that will impact cash flows and/or total budgets within a timeframe that allows for budget adjustments.

Directly supervise members of the development and communications team.

Provide management, leadership, and coaching of the development and communications team to ensure a strong team and effective interaction with the entire organization.

Work with members of your team to set annual goals and develop work plans that align with the overall team and organizational goals.

Participate in hiring, onboarding, and ongoing evaluation of staff performance.

Share regular progress and updates with the CEO on direct reports’ progress and work plans.

Attend team meetings, interact with the Board of Directors, and serve as a member of the leadership team.


Qualifications and Skills

Required

5+ years’ nonprofit development experience

Knowledge of and relationships with Utah funders

Must be outgoing, gregarious and be comfortable with current, lapsed, and potential donors

Must be available in office Monday through Thursday, with some evenings and weekends

Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel required

The ability to build relationships and connect with donors on a level that is professional and shares the stories in a compelling manner.

Excellent personal, verbal and written communication skills.

Record keeping experience

Strong command of the English language with the ability compose, edit and proof individual donor proposals, grant proposals, and direct mail appeals.

Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to establish priorities

Able to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.

Initiative and collaborative skills.

Foster and promote business relationships and partnering within the community.

Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred

Management experience

Experience with Salesforce CRM, Canva (or similar), OneCause, Asana, and project management software


Pay & Benefits

Full-time exempt, salaried ($75,000 to $85,000)

Annual bonuses

40 hours/week
