Director of Finance and Human Resources
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Finance and Human Resources serves as a strategic thought partner and key member of Utah Film Center’s leadership team. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role provides both high-level strategic leadership and hands-on management of the organization’s financial and human resources operations.
The Director personally performs day-to-day accounting functions while leading financial planning, reporting, compliance, and HR administration. The role is critical to maintaining accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements.
The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, collaborative, and energized to strengthen systems within a small, mission-driven organization where teamwork, transparency, and adaptability are essential.
This position represents an exciting opportunity for a finance and operations leader to strengthen the internal capacity of a respected, high-impact nonprofit organization during a period of growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management
- Lead the annual budgeting and organizational planning process in partnership with the Executive Director.
- Administer and monitor financial plans and budgets; provide regular updates to leadership on financial performance.
- Manage organizational cash flow, forecasting, and financial sustainability planning.
- Perform and oversee transactional accounting functions, including:
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Payroll processing and payroll liabilities
- Journal entries and reconciliations
- Month-end close and financial reporting
- Prepare and present accurate monthly and annual financial statements.
- Oversee grant and program accounting, including financial reporting for funders and donors.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process; liaise with external auditors and the Board Finance Committee.
- Oversee contract financial management, billing schedules, and collections.
- Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Develop and maintain the organization’s financial policies and procedures manual.
- Present financial information and analysis to the Board of Directors as needed.
Human Resources & Administration
- Oversee human resources operations, including compensation, benefits administration, and HR compliance.
- Manage employee onboarding and support annual performance evaluation processes.
- Monitor compliance with federal and state employment laws and nonprofit regulations.
- Maintain required organizational certifications and compliance documentation.
- Review and update the employee handbook annually, recommending revisions to leadership and/or the Board.
- Advise senior leadership on personnel and organizational management matters.
- Counsel staff on HR policies and procedures.
- Oversee employee-related insurance programs, retirement plans, and medical benefits.
- Develop and manage staff training related to financial systems, HR policies, and organizational procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- 5–7 years of professional experience, including at least 3 years in financial and administrative management.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP standards, and fund accounting principles.
- Demonstrated experience managing financial reporting, audits, and organizational compliance.
- Experience performing hands-on accounting work in addition to strategic financial leadership.
- Ability to communicate financial concepts clearly to non-financial colleagues.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.
Preferred
- MBA and/or CPA designation.
- Experience with nonprofit grants management, including federal grants compliance.
- Knowledge of nonprofit human resources best practices.
- Experience with cloud-based financial and HR systems such as:
- QuickBooks
- Paychex
- Employee Navigator
- Salesforce or similar CRM platforms

Pay Range: $75,000-$85,000

The Utah Film Center is a Salt Lake City-based 501(c) (3) organization that connects people, stories, and ideas through film exhibition, media arts education, and artist support. Founded in 2002, Utah Film Center presents films for cinema lovers of all ages, offers in-class and teacher-focused education programs, and provides a variety of services and support for filmmakers and media artists. We collaborate with educational and community organizations to champion underrepresented voices and perspectives, encourage diversity, empathy, and community-building, and develop new audiences for film. Additionally, we curate and organize two film festivals each year: the Tumbleweeds Film Festival, which is geared towards kids and families, and the Utah Queer Film Festival, featuring stories from the LGBTQIA+ community.
