Director of Philanthrophy
JOB SUMMARY:
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake (BGCGSL) is seeking an engaging and experienced Director of Philanthropy to lead the Resource Development and Public Relations efforts for the organization. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about helping youth succeed and will join a team of dedicated and passionate professionals of one of the largest youth development organizations in the state, reaching nearly 6,000 kids and teens in Salt Lake, Carbon, and Tooele Counties. This role serves a member of the senior leadership team to help execute and carry out the mission and strategic plan of the organization.
In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Philanthropy is responsible for all fundraising, development, and external communication activities. The Director of Philanthropy will have the primary role for establishing the infrastructure needed to secure a $7 million+ annual budget through the solicitation of major gifts, private and public grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. The successful candidate will have experience in building a diverse donor pipeline through identification, qualification, and cultivation strategies. The Director of Philanthropy will conduct face-to-face solicitations with current and prospective donors, involving Club executives and key volunteers, as appropriate. This professional must have an established background in coordinating nonprofit donation strategies and staff and volunteer leadership. The Director of Philanthropy will also oversee the strategy and execution of all external communications to create a strong organizational image and communicate the impact of our mission among key stakeholders, donors, and the community at large. It is expected that the amount raised in future years will increase with the demand to expand services to more youth and provide an Optimal Club Experience to strengthen the organization's capacity and increase our impact and reach within our communities.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Leadership
Provide leadership and direction for the Resource Development department and oversee a staff of three (3) staff and an independent contract grant writer to create an annual plan that includes all phases of fundraising, including but not limited to the annual campaign, major gifts, planned giving, endowment campaigns, special events, and all operations required to fund and fiscally stewart BGCGSL operations to deliver programs within the community
Collaborate with executive staff and the Board of Directors to establish a Culture of Philanthropy and engage them in donor stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation activities
Collaborate with CEO and Resource Development committee to develop and implement single and multi-year resource development plans across all contributed revenue streams to create a diversified revenue portfolio and increase long-term sustainability for the organization
Resource Development
Manage a portfolio of current and prospective major gift prospects to cultivate relationships, develop proposals, and conduct solicitations of individual donors
Evaluate giving trends of individual donors and determine those with potential for upgrading to major gift status
Collaborate with Club executives and key volunteers to engage them in donor solicitations, based on donor interests, personal relationships, program expertise or other criteria
Oversee the preparation and strategy for proposals for public and private funding sources including, state and federal grants, foundations, and corporate entities
Negotiate with vendors and community partners to solicit in-kind goods and services that support the organization's operations
Communications and Public Relations
Develop an external communication strategy across multiple media channels, including press, print, social, and digital media to engage donors and increase awareness and understanding of the organization's impact with key stakeholders and create a strong public image for the organization
Create and implement an annual advocacy plan to elevate the organization's voice on issues facing youth and afterschool programs and provide thought leadership to develop strategic partnerships with key community partners to increase opportunities for funding and create top of mind awareness among potential private and public funders
Resource Management
Control expenses related to fundraising activities within budget and manage record keeping for resource development department, assuring that effective administrative and operational support functions are in place
Collaborate with finance and administrative team for reconciliation of revenue and projection of cash flow related to contributed income
Maintain donor and financial records within accordance to the American Fundraising Professionals code of ethics
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Experience:
Four-year degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent experience
A minimum of five years of relevant fundraising experience with a proven history of major gift solicitation, CFRE accreditation preferred
Five years of experience leading and managing a team
Demonstrated ability in working cross-functionally with staff, leadership, board members, and community leaders
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with all types of people
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, board members, volunteers, community groups, and other related agencies
Knowledge of accessing and utilizing donor database and CRM software platforms
Other Requirements:
Exceptional organizational skills & attention to detail
Prepare reports and track key performance indicators of fundraising goals
Communicate with donors and staff via email, phone or social media
Answer donor and staff inquiries in a timely fashion
Utilize prospect research tools and donor database to build donor relationships
Be adaptable and flexible to change
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
