Position Title: Immigration Assistant

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Full or part-time status: Part-time, Temporary

Department: Migration and Refugee Services

Reports to: Immigration Program Manager

Hiring Range: $18.00- $23.75 per hr. DOE

Primary Function of Position

As the Immigration Assistant, you will work closely with legal staff to prepare and file immigration cases on behalf of Afghan parolees. You will provide interpretation between Dari/Pashto and English, as well as translation of documents in both directions to support clients and casework.

Major Position Responsibilities

  1. Legal Preparation: Work with CCS legal staff to prepare client declarations and immigration applications.
  2. Translation: Translate documents from Dari and Pashto into English with accuracy and attention to tone.
  3. Interpretation: Provide interpretation for clients during immigration interviews, including asylum interviews that may last longer than three hours.
  4. Clerical Duties: Complete clerical and data entry work independently, maintaining accuracy and organization without close supervision.
  5. Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client information and legal casework.
  6. Preferred Qualities: Demonstrate openness, compassion, and graciousness when helping clients navigate legal obstacles.

Work Environment

  1. This position is in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

  1. While primarily a sedentary role, some filing tasks are involved. This entails lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasionally bending or standing as needed. 
  2. This position will also require driving and may require the transportation of clients in agency vehicles for important appointments.

Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities

  1. Language Proficiency: Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English, Dari, and Pashto, both verbally and in writing.
  2. Organizational and Planning Skills: Strong organizational abilities with the capacity to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively.
  3. Data Management and Accuracy: Skill in handling data with precision, ensuring attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping, reporting, and documentation.
  4. Problem Solving and Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze problems, anticipate challenges, and implement effective solutions.
  5. Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and respectfully to diverse audiences.
  6. Flexibility and Adaptability: Ability to adjust to changing needs, priorities, and circumstances in a dynamic work environment.
  7. Teamwork and Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, contributing to a positive and supportive workplace culture.
  8. Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, with mandatory Excel skills and strong ability in Outlook and Word. Experience with Access or other database applications is preferred.
  9. Data Entry and Administrative Skills: Demonstrated keyboarding and data entry proficiency, with strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  10. Office Systems Knowledge: Understanding of office management systems, administrative functions, and clerical procedures, with the ability to apply these in a professional work environment.

Education, Training and Experience

  1. A degree in higher education is preferred, but the degree need not be one from the U.S. A candidate who can document a degree in higher education from Afghanistan or another country would meet this qualification.

Background Screening Requirement

  1. Must pass BCI/FBI background check.

Licenses, certifications and credentials

  1. Current Utah driver's license, proof of auto insurance with minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident, 21 years of age or older, a clean driving record, and ability to meet CCS vehicle safety requirements.

Position status and expected schedule.

  1. The general work schedule is 25-29 hours per week, to be worked Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
  2. This is a temporary position ending December 30, 2025.
