KUAA 99.9FM Community Engagement and Underwriting Manager
KUAA 99.9FM Community Radio is seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Community Engagement and Underwriting Manager to lead sponsorships, underwriting, challenge grants, and special event initiatives. This role blends fundraising strategy with creative community engagement, helping KUAA build lasting partnerships with local businesses, arts organizations, and nonprofits. The manager will plan and execute in-house and outreach events, lead seasonal Radiothons, and collaborate with DJs and staff to craft compelling sponsor messaging across platforms. Compensation: $20 / hr. Plus 15% commission on underwriting contracts.
Shift and Hours: 20 hrs a week. Works some Friday evenings and weekends associated with events. Days and time of day work is negotiable. Needs to be present at All Staff (1st W 10-11am) and Manager (3rd W 10-11am) meetings.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In-House and Outreach Events (Hours will vary depending on the schedule of events.)
Assist with KUAA presence at outreach events, as needed and scheduled by the Station Manager.
Oversee planning and execution of some in-house events, as needed and scheduled by the Station Manager. Currently KUAA hosts 3-4 large events per year and is looking to expand those.
Underwriting - Support fundraising efforts, including on-air coordination, DJ engagement, and storytelling. (Minimum of 5 hours a week)
Relationship Building & Community Engagement
Develop long-term partnerships with local businesses, arts organizations, and nonprofits that align with KUAA’s mission.
Attend community events and networking functions to promote KUAA and identify potential sponsors.
Create customized sponsorship opportunities tied to specific shows, themes, or community campaigns.
Strategy & Analytics
Track campaign performance using metrics like listener engagement, airtime value, and sponsor retention.
Analyze audience data to refine targeting and improve sponsor alignment.
Prepare quarterly reports summarizing underwriting impact, trends, and opportunities.
Creative Development
Collaborate with DJs and producers to craft engaging, mission-aligned sponsor messaging.
Design branded content opportunities, such as sponsored segments, artist spotlights, or themed playlists.
Ensure tone and style of underwriting messages reflect KUAA’s artistic and community-driven identity.
Training & Compliance
Train DJs and volunteers on how to read underwriting copy on-air in compliance with FCC guidelines.
Maintain a compliance checklist for all sponsor messaging and contracts.
Update internal documentation on underwriting policies and best practices.
Cross-Platform Promotion
Integrate underwriting into KUAA’s digital presence, including website, newsletters, and social media.
Coordinate multi-channel campaigns that combine on-air, online, and event-based visibility for sponsors.
Memberships/Donors
Oversee the management of station memberships, monthly donations, and gift distribution/acknowledgments.
Lead Radiothons: (Done in conjunction with Station Manager and Morning DJ.) (Seasonal twice a year, could necessitate extra hours during the week leading up to and during Radiothons)
Planning & Strategy
Develop the Radiothon schedule, including themes, featured segments, and DJ shifts.
Set fundraising goals and track progress throughout the campaign.
Coordinate with station leadership to align messaging with broader organizational priorities.
Debrief with staff post-campaign to assess impact and gather feedback.
On-Air Coordination
Coach DJs and hosts on fundraising messaging, tone, and call-to-action delivery.
Schedule live interviews with donors, community leaders, and artists.
Ensure on-air consistency, including donor acknowledgments, pledge updates, and station branding.
Donor Engagement
Work with staff to identify and cultivate donors, including past supporters and new prospects.
Responsible for securing matching grants from the community, in collaboration with DJs. Dollar amount is to be determined by Station Manager.
Oversee thank-you messaging, donor shout-outs, and incentive fulfillment (e.g., merch, giveaways).
Track and report donation metrics, including hourly totals and campaign milestones.
Promotion & Outreach
Collaborate with marketing staff to create social media content, email blasts, and press releases.
Coordinate community outreach, including partner organizations and local businesses.
Ensure visibility across platforms before, during, and after the Radiothon.
QUALIFICATIONS
Radio Knowledge
Experience in radio broadcasting/engineering.
Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations relevant to radio station operations.
Fundraising & Revenue Development
Experience securing sponsorships, underwriting, and challenge grants
Ability to identify and cultivate funding opportunities from local businesses, foundations, and individual donors
Understanding of nonprofit fundraising principles and donor stewardship
Event Planning & Coordination
Skilled in planning and executing community events, donor receptions, and fundraising campaigns
Ability to manage logistics, budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships
Comfortable working evenings or weekends for special events when needed
Relationship Management
Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with sponsors, partners, and community stakeholders
Ability to represent the station’s mission and values in public-facing settings
Communication & Outreach
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for crafting proposals, outreach materials, and event promotions
Familiarity with social media, email marketing, and community engagement strategies
Organizational & Administrative
Detail-oriented with strong project management and time management skills
Comfortable using CRM or donor management systems, spreadsheets, and basic budgeting tools
Mission Alignment
Passion for community media, local storytelling, and public service
Ability to work collaboratively with a small team and adapt to a dynamic nonprofit environment
