About the Position

The Library Aide plays an essential role in library operations by sorting, straightening, and shelving books and other library materials, and providing general customer service assistance as well as assisting with circulation throughout all locations. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Material placement. Performs a variety of material placement processes including sorting and shelving library materials. Retrieves materials from library book drop. Refreshes library displays and surrounding areas.

  • High quality customer service. Provides general customer service assistance to library patrons including assisting with technology, computers, self-checkout, providing general directional instructions and basic reference transactions. 

  • Circulation tasks. Performs a variety of activities which are repetitive in nature related to the checking-in and checking-out of library materials, and pulling patron hold requests. Monitors the collections for damages and repairs. May use automated material handler for automated sorting of library materials.

  • Technology requests. May assist patrons with the use of computers and technology, including catalogs, internet, e-mail, computer programs, databases, etc.

  • Shelf reading. Monitors the collection for accurate placement of materials.

  • Working relationships. Fosters good working relationships with diverse people including staff, patrons and vendors. Accepts assignments from supervisor, manager or other Library staff in a professional and timely manner.

  • Programming and outreach. Under the supervision of the designated program or service coordinator, may perform in a support role with delivering high quality library programs and services to community members.

  • Committees and workgroups. May participate in committees or workgroups on activities outlined in the strategic plan.

  • Other duties. Performs other duties as assigned or required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Completion of two years of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates an aptitude or ability to perform the required tasks.

  • Enthusiasm for books and libraries and a strong desire to work with the public.

  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

  • Ability to work days, nights or weekends as scheduled.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Spanish language and/or other non-English language skills.



Working Environment

  • Work is performed in a library environment.

  • Subject to repetitive movement, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects. May be subject to standing or sitting for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift/carry library materials (up to 50 lbs) and push/pull library carts.

  • Must have good hand mobility and coordination.

  • Normal stress related to working in a busy, urban environment.

  • Subject to intermittent periods of inclement weather when retrieving library materials or participating in library outreach programs.


Schedule

  • Part-time, 18 hours per week. May include days, evenings, and/or weekends.

  • Completion of criminal background check will be required if the candidate is over eighteen (18) years of age.

Compensation

  • Grade 11; Minimum $13.25/hour. 

  • This is a part-time position and includes excellent benefits such as vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, and public transit reimbursement.
