Living Traditions Festival: Education Lead

SUPERVISOR: Performing Arts Program Manager
EMPLOYMENT LENGTH: March 2, 2026 - May 29, 2026
PART TIME/FULL TIME: Part-time Temporary
COMPENSATION: $25.00 per hour
NOTE: Projected hours for the duration of employment are approximately 260 hours, with an anticipated average hours worked at 15 and increasing hours around the festival time. The 2026 Living Traditions Festival dates are: Friday, May 15 - Sunday, May 17, 2026.
DESCRIPTION:
This job is a lead position assisting in the planning and production of the Living Traditions Festival, a free and public festival which has served upwards of 30,000 members of the public each year for 39 years. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting our Living Traditions School Day, which serves approximately 1500 elementary school-aged children, as well as our Kids Area and hands-on workshops during the duration of the festival. This position directly supports the Performing Arts Program Manager, operating as a team leader and festival planner, among other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Event Planning & Development
Create an updated invite list of classes/schools/homeschool groups for School Day and gather RSVPs.
Program and oversee the contracts of School Day hands-on craft and performances.
Create a School Day program guide and map for teachers/parents.
Program and oversee the contracts of Kids Area for the public part of the Festival.
Coordinate logistics with other staffers such as setup needs with Production Lead and volunteer needs with Volunteer Lead.
Hire, train, and supervise the Education Assistant and support onsite operations.
Event Execution & Monitoring
Oversee School Day program. This includes but is not limited to (1) Ensuring safety of children and public with school bus drop-offs and pickups. (2) Helping to oversee and assign roles for School Day volunteers. (3) Ensuring proper setup of all vendors and participants, materials and signage prior to event opening. (4) Ensuring safety and movement of classes from one activity to another. (5) Working with the Performing Arts Program Manager and Production Lead in the event of inclement weather to facilitate a safe backup plan. (6) Oversee any necessary School Day cleanup prior to the festival opening to the public.
Oversee Kids Area activities during the public portion of the festival.
Oversee hands-on workshops during the public portion of the festival.
Assist in any group projects as needed.
Strike and restoration of festival grounds in cooperation with production staff and other festival vendors.
Post-Festival Evaluation & Documentation
In partnership with Performing Arts Program Manager and other key staff, ensure that proper documentation of all special project efforts are carefully reviewed and properly archived.
Implement and monitor a post-festival assessment of education-related activities.
Send out a post-festival survey and thank you to all participating schools and artists.
Ensure that all education-related assets have been recovered, inventoried, and assessed for damages, seeking replacements or repairs where needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
Experience working with and creating plans and activities for elementary school children is required.
Experience in working for large scale festivals or events is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Proficient in all Microsoft products (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written & verbal) required.
Familiarity with Dropbox Sign and Submittable preferred.
Knowledge of the local arts community is a plus.
Professional & positive attitude and demeanor (tact, positivity, and diplomacy).
Detail oriented, able to audit work to avoid mistakes, and perform tasks accurately.
Able to lift upwards of 50 pounds and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
During the festival, this position requires long hours & exposure to sometimes inclement weather.
