Maintenance Technician

Safe Harbor is seeking a motivated Maintenance Technician who is responsible for performing routine maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of Safe Harbor Crisis Center (SHCC) facilities, including emergency shelter and transitional housing units.
This position supports safe, functional, secure and welcoming environments for clients and staff while adhering to organizational policies, safety standards, confidentiality requirements, and trauma-informed service principles.
The Maintenance Technician is a part-time position with no more than 30 hours a week. Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with flexible schedule options.
Summary of Descriptions and Responsibilities:
General Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, including:
- Painting, drywall repair, and patching
- Door, lock, and hardware repair/replacement
- Basic fixture replacement (e.g., faucets, light fixtures—non-electrical)
- Flooring repairs and general unit upkeep
- Filter replacement
- Complete unit turnover tasks between client occupancy, ensuring units are clean, safe, and move-in ready.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities and grounds to identify maintenance, safety, and security concerns.
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on buildings, units, and equipment
- Identify maintenance needs and report issues proactively
- Maintain maintenance logs and documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
- Recommend repairs, replacements, and preventative measures to extend the life and functionality of SHCC facilities and equipment.
Work Order Management
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner
- Prioritize urgent and safety-related and client-impacting repairs
- Communicate with staff regarding maintenance timelines,updates, and project status
- Track and document completion of assigned maintenance requests
Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate with licensed contractors for work outside of scope, including:
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- HVAC
- Structural or large-scale repairs
- Assist in obtaining bids and scheduling work when needed
- Support facility improvement projects and capital maintenance initiatives as assigned
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain safe, secure, and habitable conditions in all SHCC properties
- Follow all safety protocols and report hazards immediately
- Ensure compliance with housing standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies
- Identify and address potential safety, security, and environmental risks affecting clients, staff, or facilities
- Maintain awareness of emergency procedures and assist with emergency response efforts as needed
Confidentiality & Trauma-Informed Practice
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client information, shelter and transitional housing locations, and organizational operations
- Interact with clients, staff, volunteers, and community partners in a respectful, professional, and trauma-informed manner
- Follow all SHCC confidentiality and safety protocols, especially within domestic violence shelter environments
Scope of Work Limitations
This position is limited to general maintenance, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs that do not require a contractor license or other licensure under Utah law. A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and an insurable driving record are required.
The Maintenance Technician will not perform:
- Electrical work requiring licensure
- Plumbing work beyond minor fixture replacement and basic drain maintenance
- HVAC or mechanical system diagnosis or repair
- Structural, permitted, or code-regulated work
- Projects exceeding applicable thresholds established by Utah law or organizational policy
All such work will be referred to appropriately licensed, insured, and qualified professionals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in residential housing, shelters, multi-unit housing, or property management.
- Knowledge of HUD, housing quality standards, or housing compliance requirements.
- Experience working in trauma-informed, nonprofit, human services, or community-based environments.
- Experience coordinating with contractors, vendors, or facility service providers.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Ability to safely navigate residential, shelter, office, and housing environments.
