Position Title: Major Giving Officer
Reports to: Development Director
Salary: $54,000 - $60,000 annual salary DOE, exempt

Founded in 1960, the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) is advancing animal welfare and creating a more compassionate world for animals in Utah and beyond. Every year, we care for more than 7,000 companion animals in need and aid tens of thousands more through programs that help people nurture and protect their pets.


As the largest private nonprofit animal welfare organization in the state, we provide the following programs to benefit Utah communities:
● Veterinary clinics that provide affordable and accessible spay/neuter and vaccinations
● Shelter, medical care, and adoption of homeless pets
● Pet retention support to help families through hardship so they can keep their pets
● Transfers from overcrowded shelters to save lives
● Pet care and behavioral resources to support harmonious home environments for pets and their families

People with a passion for animal welfare are at the heart of our organization, and we are currently seeking a Major Giving Officer with a creative and energetic personality to join our development team.

Primary Responsibilities

● Manage and expand relationships with existing donors.
● Identify, cultivate and steward new donors to support HSU.
● Directly interact with, engage and solicit donors (both virtually and in-person, when appropriate) to secure major gifts.
● Oversee and execute all steps of the moves management process.
● Analyze Raiser Edge NXT data to identify untapped donor pools, and look externally to discover new prospective donors to engage with HSU.
● Develop and manage a portfolio of approximately 100+ donors, establish donor-centric goals, and create and maintain strategies for high-level donor stewardship.
● Expand the number of major gifts ($5,000+) and planned gifts from HSU supporters.

● Directly solicit major and planned gifts, and partner with the Development Director, Executive Director, and Board members in key solicitations.
● Develop unique cultivation and stewardship opportunities and participate in broader donor cultivation events.
● Track portfolio activity, donor communication, and progress in Raiser Edge NXT; review reports that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance.
● Qualify a pipeline of major donors for inclusion in portfolios across the entire development team.
● Work with all areas of development to support a major-gifts campaign, which includes multi-year strategies for annual gifts and special projects.
● Train and manage a major-gifts volunteer team.
● Meet ambitious portfolio revenue goals.


Other Duties/Responsibilities
● Work with appropriate program staff to secure programmatic information and align fundraising plans with programmatic priorities.
● Partner with colleagues to identify opportunities to engage prospective donors in existing events and/or support or facilitate such opportunities to be more inclusive of external audiences.
● Conduct donor/prospect research, using free and paid resources.
● Maintain working knowledge of programmatic priorities and issues as they occur.
● Assist with communications to donors about HSU’s mission, activities and impact.
● Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
● Minimum of 4 years of fundraising or sales experience required; demonstrated nonprofit development experience is preferred, but other, transferable experience will be considered.
● A Bachelor's Degree or combination of education and experience is required.
● Direct work soliciting donors and closing and stewarding major gifts for a global organization is ideal.
● Demonstrated ability to achieve revenue goals; proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts in the $10K-$50K+ range.
● Work in animal welfare organizations is a plus, but not required. Superlative oral and written communication skills, with high attention to detail.
● Strategic thinker with strong project management skills.
● Willingness to incorporate the principles of Community Centric Fundraising into your development work.
● Ability to work both independently and as part of a team within a diverse community; ability to work with minimal direction and guidance after initial instruction.
● Computer and Internet proficiency: Google Apps, Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365, and SharePoint experience a plus; skills in Excel and web navigation.
● Experience with cloud-based CRM/database systems a plus.
● Experience with prospect research tools a plus.
● Ability to function under pressure, meet deadlines, handle multiple requests, and provide detailed and accurate execution of various tasks simultaneously.
● Good judgment, sense of humor, discretion and confidentiality.


Work Schedule
● Typical work week is Monday - Friday, 9am–5pm.
● During events, the position will include later weekday and weekend hours, requiring a flexible work schedule depending on needs.
● Hours and days are subject to change based on event demands.


Physical Requirements/Work Environment
● Ability to perform physical movements as required for the position.
● Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and climates.
● Ability to work with animals of varying temperaments as needed.
● Responsible for always presenting a neat and professional appearance to the public.
● Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
