Job Summary:  As a THRIVE Center for Survivors of Torture therapist, you will play a crucial role in helping torture survivors and their families overcome the severe, pervasive, and long-lasting effects of torture, and achieve sustained physical, social, emotional, and economic well-being. Working under the guidance of the Clinical Director, you will provide individual, family, and group mental health therapy. Collaborating closely with each client, you will work towards the goals outlined in their treatment plan. Additionally, you will work in conjunction with our multidisciplinary team to plan interventions, integrate services, and promote holistic healing. Our trauma-informed and diverse team will provide you with an environment for professional development and growth, enabling you to make a significant impact on organizational growth and programming.


About THRIVE Center for Survivors of Torture: The mission of THRIVE Center for Survivors of Torture (THRIVE) is to promote the health and well-being of the world’s torture survivors. At the core of torture, the trust between two human beings is destroyed. Our services focus on restoring trust and helping a survivor rebuild emotional, physical, social, and spiritual bonds. Our work also aims to prevent the effects of intergenerational trauma.

THRIVE was founded in 2003 in response to the unmet needs of torture survivors in our community. Today, THRIVE is the only organization in Utah that specializes in serving torture survivors. To date we have served over 4,500 individuals.

Our trauma-informed services include: individual, couple, & family psychotherapy • group therapy, support, &education • intensive case management • medical assessment, advocacy, & referral • psychiatric care •pharmacological education • legal referral for asylum seekers • massage therapy •preventative & wellness care • comprehensive assessment & evaluation • specialized training and consultation for professionals who encounter torture survivors in their practice.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about human rights, mission-driven, self-motivated, committed to professional growth and learning and are excited about providing holistic services to refugees and asylum seekers.


Job Responsibilities:

50%

Direct client services:

  • Conduct comprehensive intakes to assess clients' needs, complete psychosocial assessments, and identify clients' history of trauma, acuity, strengths, and healing/recovery goals.
  • Develop family-centered, strength-based, and culturally appropriate treatment plans. Provide outpatient services including individual counseling, family counseling/training, and group counseling.
  • Collaborate with UHHR case managers on shared cases to ensure cooperation with relevant case management services in alignment with the client's treatment plan.
  • Provide clients with supportive referrals to community services and ensure follow-up and connection.
  • Address unique mental health needs of clients by working with them in community settings, outside of the office, to support their mental well-being, community integration, and resource development.

Indirect client services:

  • Learn and understand eligibility requirements and documentation for torture and asylum programs.
  • Collaborate with community partners, including case workers at refugee/immigrant serving agencies, to coordinate services for clients and avoid duplication.
  • Maintain timely clinical documentation, including progress notes, patient assessments, service/treatment plans, and other required forms/records. Maintain detailed case files and other documentation.
  • Participate in ongoing supervision with the Clinical Director.
  • Flexibility is crucial to meet client needs, including the possibility of evening and weekend hours.

  • Agency Responsibilities:
  • Participate in other department and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings.
  • Complete administrative responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain licensure/credentials as needed, including required CEU’s
  • Attend trainings relevant to job function, as supported by the budget and supervisor


Qualifications: 

Required education, experience, certifications, licenses, or registrations

  • Interest and passion for healing trauma, working with marginalized and underserved individuals, and ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Ability to work effectively with an interpreter.
  • Current Utah licensure as a CSW, LCSW, CMHC, ACMHC, AMFT, or LMFT.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Valid driver's license and current automobile insurance.
  • Must pass and maintain background check


Preferred education, experience, certifications, licenses, or registrations

  • Two or more years of experience providing direct services to culturally and linguistically diverse clients (including internships and/or practicum).
  • Familiarity working with trauma and adolescents.
  • Fluency in another language is preferred (Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, etc.)

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Experience, comfort, and sensitivity working in multi-cultural environment is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of the US immigration system, including asylum process
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, recognize appropriate boundaries and cope with emotionally stressful situations
  • Ability to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team and multi-cultural team
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple priorities and one's own schedule
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements and political climate
  • Ability to work in a dynamic context and respond to various needs
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel) and Google Apps
  • Demonstrated interest in issues of immigrant communities, political torture, severe war trauma, social justice, and human rights issues

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities; however, may oversee volunteers and/or interns. 

Work Environment: 

  • Services are provided on-site at THRIVE offices. Hybrid schedule is up to 5 hours per week remote.
  • Time spent on the computer is approximately 50%

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit (at a desk for extended periods of time), stand, and walk. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, of up to 10 pounds.

Travel: A valid driver’s license and insurance is required, and you may need to transport clients occasionally

Position Details: 

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Range for CSW or equivalent license is $58,000 to $65,000 and for LCSW or equivalent the range is $65,000 to $75,000.
