Utah's Hogle Zoo is a non-profit organziation that sits on over 42 acres of natural hillside terrain, generously donated by the Hogle family in 1931.

About the Role

The Payroll & Accounting Clerk supports the Accounting Department in preparing, examining, validating, and recording financial transactions. This role plays a vital part in ensuring accuracy and compliance across payroll, revenue processing, employee records, and financial documentation—contributing to the efficiency and integrity of the Zoo’s financial operations.


This is a full-time position with a typical Monday-Friday schedule and occasional evening hours as needed. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Apply critical thinking to identify variances, abnormalities, and inconsistencies in daily financial documents and processes.
  • Manage zoo revenue deposits, ensuring complete and accurate documentation for accounting entry; resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Review, verify, and record daily attendance figures, and promptly report concerns to the supervisor or Accounting Manager.
  • Support payroll functions including biweekly submissions, employee onboarding, benefit enrollments, and terminations.
  • Review payroll data for accounting system general ledger posting and maintain employee records in the retirement plan database.
  • Prepare monthly insurance worksheets for invoice reconciliation.
  • Distribute and track monthly business credit card statements, verifying cardholder completion.
  • Maintain financial records according to state retention policies.
  • Assist with other general accounting duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in payroll and accounting; nonprofit or industry-specific experience is a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience with HR systems, ADP, and Utah Retirement Systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, solve problems, and handle sensitive information with integrity.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.


Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate effectively via phone, email, and in person.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and frequent use of computers and office equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move items up to 10 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity required for operating standard office equipment.
  • Work is conducted in a traditional office setting with extended periods at a workstation.
