Peer Recovery Coach - Ogden

GENERAL OVERVIEW OF ROLE

The Peer Recovery Coach will be working through the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP). This position is a non-clinical, Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS), working under supervision of the USARA Program Manager and the Reentry Project and Community Engagement Coordinator from the Sheriff’s Office. The PRC will split their time between the Weber County jails and USARA’s Ogden Recovery Community Center. PRC’s work together with other PRC team members to further USARA’s mission and provide direct Recovery Support Services for individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD), at any stage within the Recovery Continuum of Care. The primary role of the PRC is to utilize their knowledge, skills & own lived-experience in recovery to promote a shared understanding & engage individuals seeking Recovery Support Services. Additionally, PRC’s are responsible for engaging participants in the Recovery Community Center, encouraging involvement in Recovery Leadership development, Mutual Aid Recovery groups, & recovery community activities and events.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide outreach, coaching and group support in various community settings (jail, homeless shelters, etc.) using your lived experience with incarceration.
• Adhere to Utah Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics & CPSS Core Competencies.
• Establish regular weekly one-on-one contact with participants, either in person or by phone to establish rapport by using Evidenced-Based Recovery Practices, Active Listening skills & shared lived-experience.
• Utilize Evidence-Based Recovery Practices, such as the Recovery Management Plan.
• Understanding of, and ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with participants.
• Advocates and supports ALL Pathways to Recovery, including but not limited to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), harm reduction, syringe exchange, etc.
• Recovery Coaching, Advocacy, & Facilitation of mutual aid recovery groups, recovery community activities & events (weekly, quarterly, annually)
• Link participants & family members to appropriate community resources.
• Provide awareness & education on critical Substance Use Disorder (SUD) topics, such as harm reduction, Naloxone education, syringe exchange, & disease prevention.
• Accurately log data in a timely manner (utilization of Recovery Data Platform (RDP) and ensure accuracy and compliance with grant reporting requirements.
• Assist participants in identifying barriers & potential supports to critical/essential needs. This includes but is not limited to financial, housing, transportation, hygiene necessities, employment, and nutrition.
• Any other job duties as assigned.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Staffing the front desk and answering incoming phone calls
• Tidiness of workplace areas (taking trash out, dishes, etc.)

Qualifications

• Must have 'Lived Experience' with incarceration and Criminal Justice system
• Minimum 2 years active recovery, & comfortable sharing recovery experience
• Certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist/Peer Recovery Coach from an approved curriculum (will send to training if needed)
• Certification as Forensic Peer Support (will send to training if needed)
• Familiar with Motivational Interviewing techniques (will train if needed)
• Ability to keep and maintain a flexible work schedule
• Must be a self-starter and internally motivated to achieve team &/or individual objectives
• Valid Driver’s license and private insured & registered vehicle
• Strong internet & computer navigation skills (moderate proficiency in MS Office Suite) and familiarity with various social media platforms
• Experience utilizing cloud-based HIPAA compliant database software (preferred)
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal & written communication
• Strong values based in work ethic and recovery-oriented principles
• Event planning experience in social/community events & service projects (preferred)
• Current knowledge of, and ability to navigate community resources
• Understanding of, & ability to maintain appropriate boundaries
• Ability to work in a professional manner within a healthcare setting
• Collaborate with USARA colleagues to build & establish community connections

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Utah Certified Peer Support Specialist 40 hour training preferred
