Production and Operations Manager
Position Overview
The Production and Operations Manager oversees book production and office operations for nonprofit literary book publisher Torrey House Press. This manager is the drumbeat of our organization, ensuring highest quality books and conducting dynamic and effective project management to see titles through from acquisition and editing to design and printing. We typically publish eight to eleven titles per year, and we work very collaboratively to create books, events, and community and have fun as we implement our mission.
Responsibilities
Project Management
- Oversees dynamic book production timelines using software tools such as ClickUp, Excel, Slack
- Guides collaboration across the organization for all elements of title development and production
- Develops agendas for and runs weekly project/production meetings
Production
- Coordinates and helps execute book cover file development
- Designs book interior files
- Prepares cover and interior files to send to printers
- Obtains quotes and manages communication with printers
- Proofreads galleys and corrects errors for finished book printing
- Produces the twice-yearly THP Catalog
- Develops occasional marketing or fundraising materials such as bookmarks, postcards, handouts
Operations
- Sorts and distributes office mail
- Coordinates and receives book shipments
- Manages online book orders
- Coordinates book mailing
- Records and deposits checks
- Performs basic bookkeeping using QuickBooks Online
- Manages book metadata
- Manages warehouse and office inventory
- Hires, trains, and works with seasonal interns
- Oversees twice-yearly mass mailings
- Assists with fundraising campaigns as needed
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: A bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience is required.
- Experience and Expertise: While some publishing experience or two years of office experience is preferred, we're looking for someone with great writing and communication skills, a can-do attitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
- Technology Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and familiarity with Adobe InDesign are required for this role. Familiarity with QuickBooks is a plus though not required.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effectively interacting with colleagues, authors, printers, booksellers, and customers.
- Adaptability: This position involves lots of change and variety day to day, so the successful candidate will be energized by a dynamic work portfolio.
- Quality Control: The successful candidate will enjoy ensuring the highest quality during every step of the book production process.
- Physical Ability: The job requires being able to lift and carry 25 pounds.
- Overnight Travel and Evening/Weekend Availability: Occasional travel within Utah and sometimes nearby states is required for staff retreats, board meetings, and some author events. Occasional evening and weekend work is required for special events.
Work Environment and Benefits
Torrey House Press seeks to balance synergistic and efficient colleague interaction at THP offices with personal flexibility. Employees may opt to divide work time between office and home (or elsewhere) as long as individual work schedules are coordinated to achieve effective work coordination and communication. The production and operations manager is expected to work in the office typically three days each week with flexible hours. Torrey House Press offers full-time employees twelve paid holidays, two weeks paid vacation (prorated during the first year and with three weeks after two years), paid sick and bereavement leave, paid parental leave (after one year), and a monthly healthcare and phone stipend.
