About the Position
The Safety Associate assists in providing high quality customer service experiences by ensuring visitors are enjoying the library in a safe manner and in accordance with our patron behavior policies. The Safety Associate will help maintain a safe and secure environment for library patrons and library staff. The Safety Associate will visit assigned Library locations and work collaboratively with staff to identify and resolve safety and patron behavior concerns.
Primary Responsibilities
Fostering a safe environment. Ensures an excellent library experience for customers and staff. Monitors exterior and interior of library premises. Observes behaviors and activities on library property, and resolves unusual or concerning behavior by applying the Library's Patron Behavior and Rules of Conduct policy. Reports any building safety concerns that may negatively impact the customer experience.
Cultivating relationships. Fosters good working relationships with diverse people including patrons, staff, volunteers and vendors. Proactively engages with customers to address issues in order to quickly diffuse situations and minimize disruption. Accepts assignments from supervisor, manager or other Library staff in a professional and timely manner.
Situational response. Responds to emergency situations such as fire alarms and building evacuations or other facility related events.
Administrative reporting. Ensure daily administrative documentation is concise and complete. Familiarity with Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA). May facilitate law enforcement requests for information, photos, or video footage.
Ensure safe vehicle operation. When driving to other Library locations, drive the vehicle in a safe manner at all times, and obeys all traffic rules.
Other duties. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent and three years experience performing customer service to a diverse population or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Utah driver license and a clean driving record. Must provide their own transportation to respond or report to various library locations. Must maintain state required vehicle insurance.
General knowledge of building security and security procedures including de-escalation techniques.
Ability to perform routine record keeping functions; exercise initiative and independent judgment and to react resourcefully under varying conditions; plan and schedule work priorities effectively; communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, vendors, contractors and the public.
Must be available to work days or afternoons, on weekends and before or after Library hours.
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods, bend over, kneel, perform functions that may require being on the ground.
Professionalism in appearance, work ethic, and positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
Spanish language and/or other non-English language skills.
EMT Certification.
Working Environment
Work is performed in a busy, urban, public library library environment.
Subject to repetitive movement; standing, walking, and bending.
Must have good hand mobility and coordination.
Subject to intermittent periods of inclement weather when working outside or traveling to other library locations.
Schedule
Full-time position, 40 hours per week
May be required to work before or after library hours and on weekends. May require being on-call.
Other Information
Completion of criminal background check will be required if the candidate is over eighteen (18) years of age.

Compensation
Starting Range Grade 14, $21.26/hour. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Mileage reimbursement is available when a personal vehicle is used for library business.
