Position Summary

The Senior Accountant plays a vital role in the financial operations of YWCA Utah by overseeing key accounting processes and ensuring compliance, accuracy, and timeliness in financial data. This position supervises two junior-level accountants and acts as a key reviewer and backup across all core financial processes. The Senior Accountant will lead efforts in transaction review, bank reconciliation, asset tracking, and department-level financial accuracy, with a focus on strong internal controls and effective departmental reporting.


Essential Job functions


Leadership & Oversight

  • Supervise junior-level accountants, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Serve as a backup to junior accountants during absences or high-volume periods.

Transaction Management

  • Review and approve bills and cash receipts entered by junior accountants.
  • Ensure all entries are correctly allocated to the appropriate department, program, and grant.

Reconciliations & System Management

  • Import and reconcile bank transactions in NetSuite on a daily basis.
  • Monitor transaction integrity and resolve discrepancies promptly.

Asset & Expense Tracking

  • Reconcile and track fixed assets and enter depreciation schedules.
  • Manage and reconcile prepaid expenses; prepare and enter corresponding journal entries.

Process & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records to support audits and compliance reviews.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to identify and implement process improvements.

Ideal candidates will have the following:

  2. General knowledge of direct victim services, violence against women and sexual violence issues; gender and race equity, from a feminist perspective.

Qualifications

  • An understanding of, and agreement with, YWCA Utah’s mission, values and philosophy regarding the elimination of racism, empowerment of women and commitment to anti-oppression work and social justice.
  • Understanding and commitment to issues of cultural diversity and anti-racism.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • Experience supervising staff and performing higher-level reconciliations.
  • Understanding of nonprofit accounting, grant management, or departmental cost allocation is a plus.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis, some weekends and evenings required.
  • Proficiency with general office duties, computer systems and technology such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as NetSuite.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time, evaluate progress, and adjust activities to complete projects within established timeframe.
  • Demonstrated experience functioning within multidisciplinary settings.
  • Skilled in establishing effective working relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate and invite collaboration.
  • Able to demonstrate skills in effective communication, conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • If driving on business, a valid Utah driver’s license, access to an automobile, and valid auto insurance required.


Physical/Sensory Demands

Work is generally performed in a safe office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit for long periods of time; use computer to enter data; use telephone to converse with customers and employees; walk and stand for long periods of time; perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement. Travel to attend conferences, training, outreach and other events occurs routinely. Rarely required to lift up to 30 lbs.
