Teaching Artist

Utah Film Center is seeking a diverse, energetic, dedicated, and passionate individual to join our team of Teaching Artists, within the Media Education Department, for the 2026-2027 academic school year. Utah Film Center’s Media Education programs introduce K-12 students to the power of filmmaking as a learning resource, storytelling method, and prospective career. Teaching Artists work to improve students’ media literacy skills through classroom workshops, film screenings, and hands-on activities designed to increase student creativity, comprehension, and critical thinking skills, while supporting Utah’s core curriculum requirements for media arts, visual arts, and more. 

The primary method of delivery for our Media Education programs will be in-person at Utah’s schools and public libraries, along with occasional “live-virtual” workshops via Zoom.

Note: This is a contractor position. We are seeking Utah professionals for this position. Applicants are not required to be located in Salt Lake Valley, but must live in the state of Utah and have reliable access to transportation.

Utah Film Center (UTFC) is a Salt Lake City-based 501(c)3 that connects people, stories, and ideas through film and media arts. Founded in 2002, Utah Film Center presents films for cinema lovers of all ages, offers in-class and teacher-focused education programs, and offers support for filmmakers. Through our programs we frequently explore the role of storytelling, cinema, art, and artists in confronting key social issues of our time, combining and juxtaposing local and global perspectives. We strive to sustain, inspire, and provoke discussion around these topics. With our unique programming model and resources, we strive to be a leader in defining the role of cinema and media arts in Utah for the 21st century.

Position Type: Independent Contractor, Non-Benefited


Schedule: Part-time, up to 20 hours per week, August 2026 – May 2027


Compensation: $50 per contract hour, including required meetings and training conducted by UTFC. Teaching Artists receive a monthly reimbursement for mileage traveled, based on the standard mileage rate set by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). 


Work Model: Hybrid (primarily in-person)

Teaching Disciplines:


Teaching Artists are filmmaking professionals, with industry insight, who are able to teach K-12 students effectively in one or more of the following film disciplines:


Animation

Film Special Effects

Voice Acting

Acting for the Screen

Filmmaking Basics

Production Design

Cinematography 

Editing

Film Scoring

Sound FX & Foley

Screenwriting


Primary Responsibilities:

Design and develop engaging, interactive workshops that give a comprehensive, age-appropriate “Behind-The-Scenes look” at your craft, with practical “How-To instruction” on one or more of the disciplines listed above, with support from Utah Film Center’s Media Education Department.

Present 60-minute workshops, in-person and “live virtual” via Zoom, to students in grades K-12, with the ability to modify content based on the grade and age level. A majority of workshops take place in elementary and middle school classrooms with students in Grades 2-8.

Develop pre- and post-workshop materials & activities for teachers to continue the lesson after the workshop, in collaboration with Utah Film Center’s Media Education Department. 

Monday-Friday availability beginning August 31, 2026, to May 28, 2027, for facilitation of workshops, particularly between 8 AM – 4 PM MT. Teaching Artist schedules will be created based on availability between these dates and times and the number of workshops booked by Utah teachers. 

Record and report hours worked, miles traveled, and other essential data points.

Qualifications

Industry experience in the field of film, media, and/or media production. 

Experience with live instruction and/or training with K-12 learners is strongly preferred. 

Ability to develop engaging and interactive learning experiences is strongly preferred. 

Ability to travel independently to a variety of Utah schools, within a predetermined service area.

Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required. 

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

A positive, self-motivated, adaptable, innovative personality that is willing to work in a dynamic, fast-paced mission-driven organization.

Demonstrates a passion for film and media arts education for changing hearts and minds.
