Red Butte Garden & Arboretum (RBGA) is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Intermountain West and together with the University of Utah, is the State Arboretum of Utah. We are located on 100 acres in the foothills on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus. The Garden has welcomed guests since 1985 and consists of over 21 acres of developed gardens and five miles of hiking trails winding through an extensive Natural Area. The Garden which is community-funded, is renowned for its numerous plant collections, display gardens, 590,000 springtime blooming bulbs; including a vast collection of daffodils; gorgeous private event spaces, a world-class outdoor concert series, and award-winning horticulture-based educational programs.


Red Butte Garden & Arboretum is seeking a detail-oriented, tech-savvy Volunteer Program Coordinator to support all aspects of managing our robust volunteer program. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people while also excelling in data tracking, scheduling, and volunteer systems. The Volunteer Program Coordinator will help manage volunteers across all areas of the Garden, including private tours, garden guide shifts, evening concerts (May through September), and large-scale events such as Garden After Dark, Blooming with Pride, and the Member Block Party. This position also assists in planning and executing the annual Volunteer Recognition Event in January. The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in Excel and database management (Volgistics preferred), capable of handling complex scheduling, and comfortable navigating shifting volunteer availability.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist in recruitment, retention, and recognition of volunteers
  • Field phone and email inquiries about the Garden and its volunteer program
  • Assist in interviewing new volunteers to determine availability and area of interest; place individuals accordingly
  • Assist in new volunteer orientation and training sessions
  • Regularly communicate with departments to track volunteer activity and evolving volunteer needs
  • Assist in volunteer incentive and awards programs
  • Maintain and update current volunteer database (Volgistics preferred)
  • Help manage volunteers for evening concerts from May through September
  • Schedule and manage volunteers for private tours and garden guide shifts
  • Manage volunteers at special events such as Garden After Dark, Blooming with Pride, the Member Block Party, and other events
  • Help plan and conduct the annual Volunteer Recognition Event in January
  • Provide on-site support and supervision for volunteers during events as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the success of the Volunteer Program


Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in business or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and three years full-time secretarial experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective written and verbal communication skills required. Knowledge of basic bookkeeping practices and direct supervisory experience preferred.

  • This position may require prolonged periods of standing and walking. Must be capable of performing these physical duties as part of the role.
