Wasatch Mountain Institute - Field Instructor

Wasatch Mountain Institute (WMI) is seeking qualified and enthusiastic individuals to serve as Field Instructors for youth-focused outdoor education programs. This position is ideal for those with backgrounds in natural history, environmental education, outdoor recreation, or the outdoor industry. 

This is a flexible, seasonal position that complements other employment or academic schedules. Instructors work on programs based on availability and program needs. The anticipated start date for this position is late April 2026.

Starting pay is $15/hour, with pay bumps based on experience, certifications, and Spanish fluency.

Responsibilities


Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:


    Facilitate outdoor activity sessions in a way that ensures all participants feel valued, safe, and included

    Inspire and connect young people to the natural world through science-based curriculum, natural history, and community relationships.

    Build respectful relationships with students, parents, teachers and fellow instructors.

    Relate positively with people of diverse ages and backgrounds.

    Effectively manage student groups and maintain program safety standards

    Create a positive, supportive learning environment for students.


Requirements

    Background in outdoor education, environmental science, outdoor industry guiding or a related field.     

    Physical ability to hike moderate distances and carry program equipment. 

    Ability to confidently manage and lead groups of students in the outdoors.

 Must be able to commit to a minimum of 3 day programs or 2 overnight programs throughout the Spring season


Preferred Qualifications

    Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification

    Spanish fluency

    Experience teaching or supporting educational programs, particularly with youth.

 Experience working with youth in outdoor learning settings.
