POSITION SUMMARY

The Zoo Corps Assistant is a seasonal position designed for responsible, enthusiastic, and committed teens currently enrolled in the Zoo’s teen volunteer program, “Zoo Corps”. This position serves as a role model and peer leader, supporting both new and returning Zoo Corps members as they engage in conservation-focused activities on Zoo grounds. The Zoo Corps Assistant position is designed for high school students aged 16 and older who want to gain hands-on work experience in leadership, guest engagement, and conservation education while receiving professional mentorship from Zoo staff. 


This is a part-time seasonal position, requiring some weekend availability during training months (March-May) and (24-32) hours/week beginning the week of June 1st. The pay rate for this position is $14.00/hour, with flexible schedules to accommodate school and family commitments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


1.    Teen Leadership and Mentorship:

o    Provide guidance and support to all Zoo Corps members during their shifts.

o    Serve as a role model by demonstrating professionalism, responsibility, and enthusiasm.

o    Assist teen volunteers in learning new activities through hands-on practice and role-playing scenarios.

o    Step-in to provide coverage for schedule gaps as needed, ensuring program operations are supported.

2.    Activity Support:

o    Help facilitate Zoo Corps activities, including guest interaction stations (biofact carts), conservation-themed games, and educational presentations.

o    Ensure all scheduled activities run smoothly by assisting with regular kit maintenance, program preparation, setup, and cleanup.

o    Support special events by helping Zoo Corps members confidently engage with guests.

3.    Teamwork and Communication:

o    Act as a peer liaison between Zoo Corps members, Team Leads and the CTE Program Manager.

o    Encourage collaboration and teamwork among teen volunteers while fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.

4.    Promoting Zoo Values:

o    Represent the Zoo Corps program and Utah’s Hogle Zoo in a professional and positive manner.

o    Adhere to and promote the Zoo’s mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EXPECTATIONS 

•    Must be a current Zoo Corps member in good standing.

•    Must be at least 16 years old at the start of employment.

•    No prior work experience is required, but year-round participation in Zoo Corps is preferred.

•    Experience in leadership and public speaking is a plus.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED

•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to assistant peers and engage guests.

•    Able to demonstrate responsibility, reliability, and a positive attitude.

•    Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with teen volunteers and Zoo staff.

•    Willingness to learn about the Zoo’s mission, conservation programs, and guest engagement techniques.

•    Willingness to learn standard office programs such as Microsoft and Google office Suites. 

•    Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and participating in physically active tasks, including standing and walking for extended periods.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION 

•    Utah’s Hogle Zoo is a drug-free workplace. All employees are subject to random drug testing. 

•    Provide a negative TB test prior to hire date and maintain TB testing through course of employment


WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions, as well as walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing and lifting up to 35 pounds. Enthusiasm, adaptability, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude are essential.
